Islands of the Western Indian Ocean

Off Africa’s east coast lies a scatter of islands with turquoise lagoons, volcanic peaks and a mix of African, French, Indian and Creole culture. Cruises reach them from South Africa, from the Middle East or Asia, and on small-ship expedition voyages.

The islands differ widely. Mauritius is a resort island with dramatic mountains and a busy capital, Port Louis. Réunion is an overseas region of France, dominated by volcanic peaks and calderas. The Seychelles are famous for granite boulders and white beaches. Madagascar is home to wildlife found nowhere else, including lemurs. The Mozambique coast adds quiet islands and beaches.

How Cruises Reach the Islands

From South Africa, MSC Armonia’s 2026–27 season includes longer cruises from Durban to Mauritius and Réunion, along with shorter trips to Mozambique. Larger international voyages sometimes call in Mauritius or the Seychelles on routes between Africa, the Middle East and Asia. For the most complete island experience, small expedition and yacht-style ships sail within the Seychelles and around Madagascar, landing at beaches and reserves larger ships cannot reach.

Because itineraries change often, our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise check the current season’s options when they quote.

Tips for Island Cruises

  • Tenders: several island calls, especially in Madagascar and Mozambique, are made by tender, which can be cancelled in rough seas.
  • Health: check malaria advice and any yellow fever certificate requirements for Madagascar, Mozambique and other stops; see health and visas.
  • Currency: each island has its own currency; cards are accepted widely in Mauritius and Réunion, less so in remote stops.
  • Sun and sea: reef-friendly sunscreen, water shoes and a snorkel mask are worth packing.

Weather and Timing

The islands are warm all year, but the southwest Indian Ocean has a cyclone season during the southern summer, roughly November to April, when storms can disrupt itineraries. Many travelers still sail then, because that is when ships from South Africa visit; good travel insurance and a flexible attitude help. Outside the cyclone months, the weather is usually drier and a little cooler, which suits hiking on Réunion or exploring Madagascar’s forests. Expedition voyages to the Seychelles and Madagascar are scheduled around the best local conditions, so ask our advisors which months each line sails. If you plan to combine the islands with a safari, remember that the best game-viewing months on the mainland may differ from the best beach months offshore.
