Africa cruises often visit several countries in one trip, each with its own health and entry rules. A little preparation, using official sources, keeps your voyage smooth.
This page is a starting point, not medical or legal advice. Rules change, and they depend on your nationality and your exact itinerary. Start planning at least two months before you travel, especially if vaccinations are needed.
Health: Where to Check
The CDC Travelers’ Health destination pages list recommended vaccines, yellow fever requirements and malaria information for every country. Look up each country on your itinerary, not only the one where you board. The CDC also publishes CDC advice for cruise travelers, which cover illnesses on board and how to stay healthy at sea.
Book an appointment with your doctor or a travel clinic early. Some vaccines need time to take effect, and the yellow fever vaccine is available only at certain clinics. If you need it, you will receive an International Certificate of Vaccination to carry with your passport.

Health Topics to Ask About
Yellow fever
Required for entry by some countries, and recommended for travel to parts of West and Central Africa.
Malaria
Present in many areas, including parts of Mozambique, Madagascar and West Africa. Your clinician will advise on prevention.
Routine vaccines
Make sure routine vaccinations are up to date, plus any others your clinician recommends for the region.
Food and water
On shore, choose bottled water and freshly cooked food, and wash hands often.
Entry Rules and Documents
- Country information: the U.S. State Department country information pages list entry, exit and visa requirements, passport validity, blank-page rules and current travel advisories.
- Passport validity: many countries want at least six months of validity beyond your travel dates.
- Visas: some ports offer visas on arrival or e-visas; others require them in advance. Your cruise line will say which it arranges.
- Copies: carry a copy of your passport photo page and vaccination certificate separately from the originals.

Health and Visa Questions
Will the cruise line arrange my visas?
Sometimes. Lines often handle group visas or tell you which visas to obtain in advance, but the responsibility is ultimately yours. Read the line’s travel documents carefully and check official sources for each country.
Do I need a yellow fever vaccination for an Africa cruise?
It depends on the countries on your itinerary and the order you visit them. Some countries require proof of vaccination from all arriving travelers; others only from travelers arriving from countries with yellow fever risk. Check the CDC page for each country.
How many blank passport pages do I need?
Some African countries require blank visa pages in addition to validity rules. The State Department’s country page lists the requirement for each country.
