Africa is not one cruise destination but several. Its southern tip is a meeting point of two oceans, its eastern islands are some of the most beautiful in the Indian Ocean, its Atlantic shore runs from desert to rainforest, and its northern coast is part of the Mediterranean world. Cruising Africa is a guide to those coasts, the ports ships visit and how to plan a voyage.
Compared with the Caribbean or the Mediterranean, fewer ships sail African waters, and itineraries vary a great deal from year to year. Many voyages are long, repositioning or world-cruise segments that link Africa with Europe, Asia or South America. Others are seasonal programs based in South Africa, and a growing number are small-ship expedition voyages exploring West Africa and the Indian Ocean.

Seasonal cruises from South Africa
Each southern summer, MSC Cruises bases a ship in South Africa. For 2026–27 it is MSC Armonia, sailing from Durban and later Cape Town to Mozambique, Namibia and the Indian Ocean islands. These cruises are sold mainly to South African travelers.
Voyages and world-cruise segments
Premium and luxury lines sail around Africa on longer voyages, often between Europe and Cape Town or between Cape Town and Asia. Many can be booked as segments of a world cruise.
Expedition cruises
Small expedition ships explore West Africa’s coast and remote Indian Ocean islands, with landings by small boat and a strong focus on wildlife and culture.

Why Cape Town Is the Hub
Cape Town is the busiest cruise port in sub-Saharan Africa for international travelers. Ships dock at the cruise terminal at the V&A Waterfront, close to restaurants, Table Mountain and ferries to Robben Island. Many Africa voyages start or end here, and many world cruises stop for one or two days.
Cape Town also makes an ideal base for pre- or post-cruise extensions: the Cape Winelands, the Cape Peninsula and its penguin colony, or a flight north to a safari lodge or Victoria Falls. Plan at least two or three days on land if you can.
When to Cruise Africa
There is no single Africa season, because the continent spans both hemispheres. Southern Africa’s cruise season follows the southern summer, when Cape Town is warm and dry and seasonal ships are based in Durban and Cape Town. Long voyages between Europe and Cape Town cluster around the start and end of that season, in autumn and spring. North Africa’s Mediterranean ports follow the European cruise calendar, with spring and autumn the most comfortable months for sightseeing in Egypt and Morocco. West Africa and the Indian Ocean islands see fewer, more scattered sailings, so the voyage you want may decide your dates rather than the other way around. - Health: some countries require proof of yellow fever vaccination, and malaria is present in parts of the continent. See health and visas for the official sources.
- Documents: passport validity rules, blank-page requirements and visas differ by country. Check each country on your itinerary.
- Seasons: southern Africa’s cruise season is the southern summer, roughly November to April; North Africa follows the Mediterranean season.
