Africa as Part of a Bigger Voyage

Many of the best Africa cruises are pieces of something larger. World cruises and long repositioning voyages often spend a week or more along the African coast, and most lines let you book just that segment.

A segment gives you the depth of a world cruise without three or four months away. Common Africa segments run between Europe and Cape Town along the west coast, between Cape Town and Asia or the Middle East across the Indian Ocean, and between South America and Cape Town across the South Atlantic. Many include an overnight in Cape Town.

Other lines, including German-market brands such as AIDA, also call at Cape Town and Walvis Bay on their world cruises. These are examples, not a complete list, and schedules can change. Our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise check every line’s current Africa sailings when they quote.

Is a Segment Right for You?

West coast segments often call at Walvis Bay for the Namib Desert.

Segments suit travelers who enjoy sea days and want to reach places few cruises visit. They are usually one-way, so you will need flights at each end, and Cape Town is an easy place to start or finish thanks to its international airport.

Because segments sell alongside full world cruises, the best cabins can go early. Booking well ahead, or watching Wave Season for promotions, gives you the most choice. For help comparing long voyages, see our sister site A Voyage Travel.

Planning a Long Africa Voyage

Flights

Open-jaw flights, arriving in one city and leaving from another, are normal. Allow a buffer day before embarkation.

Visas

Each country on the segment may have its own rules. The cruise line will tell you which visas it arranges and which you must obtain.

Health

Long itineraries can include yellow fever and malaria areas. See a travel clinic early; see our health page.

Insurance

Choose a policy that covers the whole trip, including medical evacuation from remote ports.

For a full pre-voyage list, see Cruising Checklist. If you are extending on land, Cape Town’s winelands and a safari in Botswana or Zimbabwe are classic additions; African River Cruises covers river safaris across the continent.
